TRICARE coverage

What TRICARE West covers for Texas military moms

Since January 1, 2025, Fort Hood and the rest of Texas have been part of the TRICARE West Region, run by TriWest Healthcare Alliance. The breast pump benefit works the same in every region and every TRICARE plan, whatever your sponsor's status.

Your breast pump

  • One manual or standard electric pump per birth event, including portable pumps
  • Available from 27 weeks of pregnancy, before or after delivery
  • Needs a prescription from a TRICARE-authorized doctor, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or nurse midwife. We request it for you.
  • No brand restrictions. TRICARE has no approved-pump list.
  • We bill TRICARE directly, so a covered pump costs you $0.

Upgrades, explained honestly

TRICARE pays up to its maximum for a standard pump. If you choose a deluxe model with extras like app or Bluetooth controls or extended rechargeable batteries, you pay only the difference. We always tell you any upgrade cost before your order ships, so there are no surprises.

Hospital-grade pumps

If your baby is in the NICU or you have a medical need, your provider can request a hospital-grade pump through a TriWest referral and authorization. Let us know on the form and we'll help you through it.

Military mom tips

Pumping tips for military life in Central Texas

Keep milk cool in Texas heat

Killeen averages about 105 days a year at 90°F or hotter, with July and August highs near 96°F. Plan ahead:

  • Fresh milk is good for up to 4 hours only at 77°F or cooler.
  • An insulated cooler with frozen ice packs keeps it up to 24 hours.
  • Refrigerate for up to 4 days, or freeze for about 6 months (up to 12 is acceptable).
  • Never leave milk or your pump in a parked car.

Sources: CDC, NOAA 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Killeen.

Pumping on duty

Army Directive 2025-02 backs soldiers who breastfeed:

  • Lactation breaks at least every 2 to 3 hours, of at least 30 minutes.
  • A private, lockable lactation space that isn't a restroom, with a seat, a flat surface, an outlet, a refrigerator for your milk and water nearby.
  • A 365-day postpartum deployment deferment, which can be extended while you're still breastfeeding.

Talk to your chain of command early, and bring your pump schedule. Source: Army Directive 2025-02.

PCS, TDY and travel with breast milk

  • Flying out of Killeen Regional Airport (GRK)? TSA allows breast milk over 3.4 ounces in your carry-on, plus ice and gel packs. Tell the officer at the start of screening.
  • On PCS or TDY orders, DoD can reimburse up to $1,000 for shipping breast milk while you're nursing a baby under 12 months. It has to be authorized on your orders first, and you'll need receipts.

Sources: TSA, Defense Travel Management Office.

After baby arrives

  • Register your newborn in DEERS and enroll in TRICARE within 90 days of birth.
  • Reorder covered supplies as you need them, like 100 milk storage bags every 30 days.
  • Pump not working like it used to? Valves and membranes wear out. You're covered for 12 every 12 months.

FAQ

Fort Hood breast pump FAQ

Quick answers for Fort Hood and Killeen families. Still wondering about something? Call (281) 894-3636 or start your order and ask us there.

Is it Fort Hood or Fort Cavazos now?

It's Fort Hood. The post was renamed Fort Cavazos on May 9, 2023, and became Fort Hood again on June 11, 2025, this time honoring Col. Robert B. Hood, a World War I Distinguished Service Cross recipient. Your TRICARE breast pump benefit didn't change with the name, and we still ship to the same on-post addresses in ZIP code 76544.

Is Fort Hood in TRICARE East or TRICARE West?

TRICARE West. On January 1, 2025, Texas moved from the East Region (Humana Military) to the West Region, run by TriWest Healthcare Alliance. Breast pump coverage is the same in both regions, and Every Ounce works with TRICARE East and West, so your pump benefit follows you if you PCS.

How do I get a free breast pump through TRICARE at Fort Hood?

Fill out our order form. We verify your TRICARE eligibility, request a prescription from your provider, bill TRICARE directly and ship a covered pump to your door at no cost to you. TRICARE covers one manual or standard electric pump per birth event, whatever your plan or your sponsor's status.

Can I get my breast pump prescription from Darnall?

Yes. TRICARE accepts a prescription from any TRICARE-authorized doctor, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or nurse midwife. That includes Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, its Killeen, West Killeen and Harker Heights Medical Homes, the Russell Collier Health Clinic and off-post OBs in Killeen or Temple. Just tell us who your provider is and we'll request it for you.

When can I order my breast pump?

TRICARE covers a pump from 27 weeks of pregnancy, and you can get it before or after your baby arrives. Many moms order early so the pump is waiting at home when they leave the hospital. Use the pump timing calculator to find your date.

Do you deliver to on-post housing at Fort Hood?

Yes. We ship to on-post homes in ZIP code 76544, including the Cavalry Family Housing neighborhoods, and to off-post addresses in Killeen, Harker Heights, Copperas Cove, Nolanville and the rest of Central Texas. Once your order is approved, you can expect your pump within a few days.

Is my breast pump really free?

A TRICARE-covered standard pump costs you $0 when you order through Every Ounce, because we bill TRICARE directly. If you choose a deluxe pump with extras like app or Bluetooth controls or extended rechargeable batteries, TRICARE lets you pay the difference. We always tell you that amount before anything ships.

Which breast pumps does TRICARE cover?

TRICARE (sometimes written Tri-Care) doesn't limit coverage to a brand or model. It covers a manual or standard electric pump, including portable pumps, and wearable pumps can qualify too; if a model has deluxe extras, you pay the difference. We carry 40+ pumps from 11 brands, including Spectra, Medela, Momcozy and Motif.

What if I PCS before my baby arrives?

No problem. Your breast pump benefit works the same in TRICARE East and West, and we can ship to your new address. Share your moving date and new address when you fill out the form, or call us if your orders change after you apply.

I'm an active-duty soldier. Where can I pump at work?

Army Directive 2025-02 requires commanders to give lactating soldiers breaks at least every 2 to 3 hours, of at least 30 minutes each, and a private, lockable lactation space that isn't a restroom. Postpartum soldiers also get a 365-day deployment deferment. A portable or wearable pump can make duty days easier.

Does TRICARE cover pump parts and milk storage bags?

Yes. TRICARE covers 100 milk storage bags every 30 days after birth, 12 valves and membranes a year, 2 replacement bottles a year and more, from week 27 until 3 years after the birth. See the full supply schedule, and ask us to help with reorders.

Can I get a hospital-grade pump if my baby is in the NICU?

If there's a medical need, like a premature baby in the NICU, your provider can request a hospital-grade pump through a TriWest referral and authorization. Tell us about your situation on the form and we'll help you with the next steps.

Where can I get lactation help near Fort Hood?

TRICARE covers up to 6 outpatient breastfeeding counseling sessions per birth event. Near post, Darnall's Women's Health Center lists lactation services, the Fort Hood WIC Clinic has peer counselors and lactation consultants for WIC families, the Texas Lactation Support Hotline answers 24/7 at 855-550-6667, and Every Ounce connects you with TRICARE-covered lactation care through our partners.

Are Guard, Reserve and retiree families covered?

Yes, if you're TRICARE-eligible. The breast pump benefit applies whatever your plan or your sponsor's status, including TRICARE Reserve Select and retiree plans. Adoptive moms who plan to breastfeed and TRICARE-eligible daughters qualify too.

Can I get a new pump for my next baby?

Yes. TRICARE covers one breast pump per birth event, so each new pregnancy or adoption qualifies for a new pump, along with its own 3-year window for supplies.

Where can I donate breast milk near Fort Hood?

The Fort Hood Milk Depot at the Fort Hood WIC Clinic, across from Darnall, collects donor milk for Mothers' Milk Bank at Austin. The milk bank screens donors first (512-494-0800). Drop-offs are by appointment at 254-532-9800, option 2, and civilian donors need a visitor pass.

Do you have a store near Fort Hood?

We're a Texas-based online supplier, so there's no walk-in store near post. Instead, we handle everything by phone, text and email and ship your pump to your door, on post or off. Most moms find that easier than a store trip with a newborn.

How fast will I hear back after I fill out the form?

A real person from our team reaches out within 24 business hours. We're available Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central, and forms sent after hours are picked up the next business day.
